New Balance Goes Live with "Reconsidered" Resale Program

We are excited to partner with New Balance to launch New Balance Reconsidered, a resale and trade-in program that allows consumers to shop for gently worn or almost new New Balance shoes that have been cleaned as needed. Customers can trade in their gently worn New Balance shoes via mail or in-store drop-off and receive a voucher on accepted items to use toward their next New Balance purchase online at NewBalance.com.

New Balance was in search of a resale partner capable of offering a custom resale program that would cater to their business needs and support the brand’s sustainability initiatives, as set out in their 2022 Sustainability and Impact Report. “We know the footwear industry has a significant environmental impact, including too many products ending up in a landfill,” said John Stokes, Director of Sustainability at New Balance. “There are many things that have to shift. Launching Reconsidered is one piece of the puzzle with a program objective to help extend product life for some of our product and get the most from what is already made.” Archive was uniquely capable of meeting New Balance’s short-term and long-term objectives for building a profitable circular business.

The products available on Reconsidered include almost new inventory from New Balance—including consumer returns and cosmetically imperfect footwear that cannot be sold as new—alongside trade-in items from customers that are cleaned as needed. Our partner Tersus Solutions, which operates innovative waterless cleaning technology and textile reclamation solutions for apparel and footwear, is managing logistics for the Reconsidered program. Tersus will process and clean the products as needed, as well as list and fulfill the items through the Reconsidered marketplace. Tersus will utilize Archive’s Resale Operations Technology to maximize profitability and efficiency for the Reconsidered businesses.

How Trade In Works

Trade-in is simple and follows four steps: first, create a New Balance Reconsidered account; second, choose the New Balance shoes you wish to trade-in; third, drop off your item in-store or send by mail; and finally, receive a voucher for accepted items to be used towards a future purchase at newbalance.com. Voucher values will be dynamic based on the seasonality and condition of the product traded in.

Our Reconsidered platform offers customers a value estimate for potential trade-in earnings, promoting transparency in the process. Upon acceptance of the item, customers will receive a voucher via email. Shoes not accepted will be donated to Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that turns shoes and clothing into opportunities for education and employment.

Reconsidered is currently only available to customers in the U.S. The in-store trade-in program will be piloted at eight retail locations before scaling into more U.S. stores later this year.
